Her father, MA Ponnappa, was an exponent in hockey, having represented Karnataka in eight Nationals between 1974 and 1986. He even had a brief foray internationally as a stellar midfielder for Italian club Eur in the European hockey circuit.

In 2001, Ashwini Ponnappa won the Indian junior championships. She won the gold medal at the South Asian Games held in 2006. In the 2010 Commonwealth Games, she won the gold medal in Women's Doubles event pairing with Jwala Gutta. At London Olympics, pairing Jwala Gutta she lost her opening match in the women's double competition to the Japanese duo Reika Kakiiwa and Mizuki Fujii in three sets. She won her next doubles match against the Chinese Taipei pair of Cheng and Chien in three sets with the scorelines reading 25-23, 14-21, 21-18.
