The Telugu film legend Akkineni Nageswara Rao (ANR) acted in 256 films spanning social, romantic and mythological themes. Another tragedy struck the Telugu film industry on Wednesday when legendary actor, Akkineni Nageswara Rao succumbed to cancer in Hyderabad.
According to reports, Akkineni Nageswara Rao (ANR), 90, condition worsened at around 1.30 am Wednesday early morning, and he was rushed to hospital where he died.
The actor Akkineni Nageswara Rao (ANR) is survived by three daughters and two sons.
Legendary Telugu actor Akkineni Nageswara Rao passed away at a private hospital in Hyderabad at 2.12 am on Wednesday after battling cancer for several months. He was 91 and is survived by three daughters and two sons, one of whom is actor Akkineni Nagarjuna.
He has been ailing for a while now and surprised people by calling a press conference on October 19, 2013 to announcethat he was diagnosed with cancer. He also said that with the wishes of his fans, he wanted to live upto a 100 years.
He died in his sleep, Nagarjuna said in Hyderabad.
Soon as news of his demise spread, there was a steady stream of people from the Telugu film industry and other fields of society, to his house in Jubilee Hills. His body is being shifted to Annapurna Studios, where it will be kept for people to pay their last respects.
Akkineni Nageshwara Rao, better known as ANR, was born on September 20, 1924 in Venkata Raghavapuram in Krishna district. His outstanding contribution to films saw him get the Padma Bhushan in 1988. Prior to that he was also awarded the Padma Sree and Raghupati Venkaiah awards. In spite of suffering from the fatal disease, ANR, known for his spirited attitude, was shooting for Manam. The movie also stars his son, Nagarjuna, and grandson Naga Chaitanya.
ANR was one of the first generation actors in Telugu. His first movie Dharmapatni was released in 1941, and he went on to act in nearly 256 films. He was instrumental in getting Telugu film industry shifted to Hyderabad. He received three Filmfare awards, and also won the Nandi Award for Bangaru Kutumbam and Megha Sandesam. Interestingly, he was the first actor to play double role in Telugu.
Akkineni Nageswara Rao (ANR) started his career playing female roles on stage. He and Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao better known as NTR were considered to be the two pillars on which the Telugu film industry thrived. Some of his hit films include,Tenali Rama Krishna, Devdas, Maya Bazaar, Missamma, Muga Manasulu, Dr. Chakravarthi, Dasara Bullodu, Prem Nagar, Premabhishekam, Seetaramayyagari Manavaralu.
Akkineni Nageswara Rao was born on September 20, 1923 in Venkata Raghavapuram of Krishna district, this first generation actor in Telugu debuted with Dharmapatni in 1941. There was no looking back and he went on to showcase his skills as an actor par excellence in 256 films, including Devadasu, Laila Majnu, Anarkali, Premabhishekham, Prema Nagar and Megha Sandesham to name a few.
Among the awards he has received in recognition of his work are Padma Vibhushan, Dada Saheb Phalke Award, the Raghupathi Venkaiah Award and the NTR National Award too. His death marks the end of another glorious, unforgettable chapter in Telugu cinema, an industry that makes the second largest number of films, next only to Bollywood.
