ACTRESS PERIZAAD ZORABIAN ABOUT MOTHERHOOD

Actress-cum-entrepreneur Perizaad Zorabian is a breath of fresh air in the otherwise Barbiefied atmosphere of Mumbai’s la-di-dah circuit. Here’s a peek at her self-confessed battle with motherhood.

What was your notion of motherhood before you became a mother?

The epitome of a great mother has been my mother Firoza. She’s always been the rockstar mom — super smart, brave, fun and committed. I worship the ground she walks on. She’s my hero, my role model. I knew I wanted to be a mother exactly like her… but she made it all look so effortless and easy… she fooled me (laughs). Being a mom is the toughest role ever.

How did you feel when you realised you were pregnant with your first child?

I started working when I was 18 and have always worked out of choice. Working gives me a sense of empowerment. When I met Boman, my husband, I was this complete workaholic — but he swept me off my feet and all of a sudden, I found myself married and wanting babies! Even though my pregnancy was planned, when I first found out I was pregnant, I was scared about how my life would change and was nervous about whether I would be a good mother. I was extremely anxious and cried every single morning all through my pregnancy. I drove Boman mad but he was amazingly supportive.

How was the experience of childbirth? What was your reaction to the babies when you first saw them?

I contracted Falsipariun malaria in my ninth month of pregnancy. I was hospitalised and battled malaria for 15 days before they rushed me in for my C-section. So it was very traumatic. At that point, all I prayed for was for my child to be safe and healthy. When I first saw Zaha, she was in Boman’s arms and I wept with joy. She was the prettiest little baby I had ever set my eyes on and still is. Even with Zayaan, the intensity of my reaction was the same… totally overwhelming.

Is there a way to ensure a healthy child as well as have a good post-pregnancy figure?

I worked throughout my pregnancy. I did shows, shot for endorsements till I was in my fifth month. I couldn’t bear to sit at home, so I started working with my father at Zorabian Chicken. I used to drive to work at our farm every day till my eighth month. I also practised pre-natal yoga.

When I was in college, I used to wear my mom’s jeans (she had three kids!). So letting go was never an option for me. My mother managed three children, a home and a business and was as fit as ever. No crazy dieting, no obsessive exercising — she just lived a normal moderate life. It takes nine months to make a baby — give yourself this much time to get back into shape. Zarine Watson (fitness trainer) got me back to the best shape I have ever been in and she made sure I ate well, slept enough and had sufficient energy to be a happy mom. All the weight goes off with exercise and moderation in diet. The key lies in enjoying motherhood, accepting it and feeling good about yourself.

How have children changed your life?

Having a child is a life-altering experience. Children give your life a completely new meaning and perspective. My life has moved out of the ‘Me, Myself and I’ zone and my children have taught me patience and most importantly, how to love unconditionally. I have become far more responsible about what I say and how I behave. I have to lead by example as children mirror their parents. I want to give my children love, emotional strength and security and most importantly, a solid education.

How do you manage children and work at the same time?
It is never easy and I have figured that it’s never going to get easy. Guilt is something every working mother needs to deal with. The secret is to not let the guilt get the better of you — instead, make it work for you. I give my best to every working hour at Zorabian. I work harder knowing that I am building a legacy for my children. When I am with my kids, I make it a point to totally disconnect from work and consciously make all the time we spend together great fun. I enjoy bathing them, reading bedtime stories and discussing about all that happened with them at school. My children are so proud of what I do.

How do you prioritise between your children and your own needs?
Unfortunately, in my entire balancing act with my children, family and work — I have completely fallen off my priority chart, which is something I am not very proud of. I have no time to exercise, socialise or catch up with friends and that’s not very healthy. It’s something I need to change. My priorities will always be my kids and my family — but Boman keeps making me aware that the most important thing for my children is their mother’s good health. So I need to hit the gym and start having some fun as well.

What have been the special moments with your children?
Every moment — good or bad — that you spend with your child builds a bond. Boman bonds with the kids while exercising in the mornings. He drops Zaha to school every morning and won’t trade that for anything in the world. My bonding is bathing them in the evenings and putting them to bed.

As a mother, what is it that you emphasise on to make sure they are brought up with sound values?

I was born into a very affluent family but in spite of having everything, my mother kept us very grounded. So virtues like moderation and ‘nothing in excess’ are imperative. I don’t remember my parents saying no to me for anything but at the same time, there were rules that we had to follow.

Did the concept of motherhood change with the birth of your second child?
With Zayaan, I was calmer and more relaxed. I was so busy with Zaha that my second pregnancy was a breeze. Before I knew it Zayaan was out. But the first year was really tough with a newborn and a two-year-old. I was an emotional wreck and totally exhausted because I didn’t really know which child needed more attention. But now when I see how close they are, I am so glad I had two children back to back.

Is there a definition of a perfect modern mum?

My mum is the perfect modern mum. She’s awesome and I don’t just aspire to be like her but I am determined to be like her. Till today she is my greatest strength and my best friend.

What is the role of a father when mums are on the go, juggling many responsibilities?
My husband Boman is the reason why I can work. Not only does he support what I do, he also encourages me. Every time I am overwhelmed with guilt about being a working mom, he reassures me that I am doing the right thing. There are a lot of things that are not perfect at home but Boman overlooks it all. He believes my best is yet to come and somewhere, I believe that too. Zaha and Zayaan are my greatest motivation — my reason for doing all that I do!
