Even as she grappled with this important life-changing turn, her mother Mona Chawla, the one person who truly inspired Juhi Chawla and was her closest confidante, passed away in a bizarre road accident in Prague during the shooting of Yash Johar’s Duplicate.

The Mehtas had planned to make a splash with their son Jay Mehta’s wedding. “There was an entire wedding planned at the Turf Club. The stage had been designed, all preparations had been done,” Juhi Chawla describes the usual excitement that prevails when a household goes into wedding mode. “Lists had been made and over 1,000 invites had already gone out to the entire family, even to people abroad.”

But the one big blip was that the bride was far from glowing. She accepts, “I was sobbing and crying, ‘Please, I don’t want to make it so public.’” Juhi Chawla was doubly emotional about a public celebration because, “I’d also lost my mom. The registered marriage was for the family, but how does a family come out and tell people, oh, you know they got married? So we were going to have a proper wedding. But I just got such cold feet, I was like, ‘I can’t do it, I’m losing everything I have.’”

It was at this juncture that her mother-in-law Sunayana Mehta took an unbelievably tough decision that startled everybody. “My mother-in-law just called off everything, she called off the entire wedding,” Juhi Chawla states, the gratitude still evident. “The rest of the family was horrified but she was the only one who said, ‘If she’s not happy, how can you make her do it?’

So, Juhi Chawla never did have that big fat Indian wedding and it was only over a period of time that people gradually came to terms with the fact that Jay Mehta and Juhi Chawla had got married. By which time, Juhi Chawla too had got used to being Mrs Jay Mehta, then became a mother herself and soon discovered that neither status change adversely impacted her life or career.
